The books does have some dark and nasty scenes, especially towards the end of the book and—yes—there is a ghost as well, but The Haunted Hotel is more of a gothic mystery than a ghost story. To be fair, the subtitle does state that it’s “A Mystery of Old Venice”, but in some modern copies of the book, the subtitle has been dropped.   You might think this is a criticism of the book but I actually really enjoyed this story. The ending was simply perfect and I ended the book was a sad but satisfied smile. Yes this book explores horror but a real horror that many do experience every day which is actually scarier than pretend demons.

Epstein's book is a treasure, full of wisdom and insight -- and deep scholarship.
